The 21st CHITEC Successfully Concluded

This CHITEC diligently follows the guidelines set out at the 19th CPC National Congress and focuses on innovative, coordinated, green, open, and shared development. Under the theme of “Take the Lead in Hi-tech Industries and Facilitate the Development of S&T Innovation Centers”, it focuses on national strategies and the major needs of economic and social development, brings together high-tech achievements, promotes and introduces quality projects to accelerate their application, explore new opportunities in the new era of economic development, and greatly boosts China’s strength in science and technology.

The fourth industrial revolution is sweeping across the globe with unprecedented momentum. China embraces the historical opportunities brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and has made strides in many respects. From the perspective of technological innovation, the emphasis on learning and absorption is shifted to focus on independent innovation; from the perspective of technological prowess, China has changed from “catching up” in the past to “catching up, running abreast, and leading”.

This CHITEC fully demonstrates that China’s original innovation capability goes from strength to strength, and breakthrough innovation has become an innovation trend; the quality of technological innovation has made a quantum leap, and technology and economy has become increasingly closely integrated; green development enjoys popular support, and the modernization featuring a harmonious man-nature coexistence has become a consensus. This CHITEC showcases the reform and practice of innovation system and mechanisms in various regions, leads the development of emerging industries, and promotes China’s economic modernization.

The four-day CHITEC witnessed over 200,000 participants in various activities. The exhibition is immensely popular, with over 1,500 Chinese and foreign corporate participants and over 100,000 visits; the 12 project promotion activities attracted more than 5,000 domestic and foreign business participants; the themed talks and 10 forums were greatly received by the industry. 332 well-known persons from home and abroad delivered speeches, and the number of audience exceeded 7,000. 36 overseas delegations from 3 international organizations and 29 countries and regions and the delegations from 29 Chinese provinces and cities participated in the exhibition. At the CHITEC Science and Technology Cooperation Project conference, the amount of contracts signed reached 15.687 billion yuan. The projects show three features: First, it highlights the guidance of high-tech industry; second, it focuses on the construction of the science and technology innovation center; third, it promotes enterprise innovation and green development.

This CHITEC holds, as always, the “Meeting Beijing in the CHITEC” series of event, in which the public can gain information about the development of the science and technology industry in Beijing during the 40-year reform and opening-up, and experience first-hand the cutting-edge high technology. At the same time, the “CHITEC Beauty” mobile phone photography contest was held to encourage citizens to participate in CHITEC activities.

The 21st CHITEC has the following eight features:

I. Bring together cutting-edge high technologies to demonstrate breakthrough innovation as an innovation trend

In recent years, great changes have taken place in scientific and technological innovation methods in China. The single breakthrough in a certain discipline and technology area in the past is replaced by comprehensive breakthrough in many disciplines and technology fields. Frontier technologies have developed in great numbers. At this CHITEC, a number of high technologies are debuted, a whole host of equipment that meets China’s strategic needs are presented, and a number of major scientific installations come to the forefront. Breakthrough innovation has become the future of innovation in China.

This CHITEC fully reflects the importance of science and technology. Major scientific installations are hailed as “pillars of a great power.” Huairou Science City highlights new developments in large scientific installations and cross-discipline research platforms, demonstrating that China has an important guarantee for making major original scientific research achievements. Likewise, Zhongguancun Science City showcases breakthroughs in the layout of forward-looking basic research. The Beijing Quantum Information Science Institute, the Beijing Graphene Institute, and Big Data Institute, and so on spearheaded by academicians have promoted original innovation research. In addition, the manufacture of cryogenic equipment breaks the monopoly of foreign companies in large-scale cryogenic refrigeration equipment industry, fills the gap in China, and meets the low-temperature environment needs of over 10 major scientific projects such as heavy ion accelerators and artificial minisun to meet the needs of national strategies.

Great progress has been made in marine technology. At the International Marine Science and Marine Economy Exhibition Area, “Jiaolong” manned submersible, the “Snow Dragon” scientific research vessel-icebreaker, and 10,000-ton maritime surveillance ship are eye-catching. Of these, SeaWing 1000 underwater glider made China the world’s second country with the capability of cross-season independent mobile ocean observation; the world’s first semi-submersible fully-automatic modern salmon deep-sea breeding equipment developed by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation for Norway incorporates the most advanced aquaculture technology, modern environmental protection concepts and the world’s leading-edge marine engineering design, and is hailed by the world aquaculture industry as inaugurating a new era of deep-sea aquaculture.

The development of integrated circuits and chips in China has attracted wide attention. Tsinghua Unigroup displays the high-tech industrial ecological chain from “chip” to “cloud”; BITMAIN’s deep-learning special-purpose acceleration chip artificial intelligence chip BM1680 applied to the cloud end is the world’s first publicly available dedicated chip, and BM1682 also leads the global counterparts. Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone showcases a complete integrated circuit industry chain including manufacturing, packaging and testing, equipment, parts and components, materials, and design, demonstrating the largest and highest-level integrated circuit industrial base in China. The workpiece machine for mask Aligner developed by U-PRECISION TECH fills a gap in the R&D and manufacturing of key components of the Chinese mask Aligner and has an exclusive and irreplaceable advantage.

II. Integration and innovation yields great results and new industries are growing rapidly

Digital technologies represented by big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence have promoted the development of the digital economy. Breaking industrial boundaries, digital economy promotes industrial integration, and forms new industries, new businesses, and new growth points.

China is gaining the first-mover advantage in artificial intelligence technology. Artificial intelligence technology and its applications can be seen everywhere at this CHITEC. Of these, the 4 paradigm Prophet Platform, the first Chinese development platform for AI users, can realize the industrial application of artificial intelligence within 30 days; the world’s first cloud-based intelligent control terminal DATA for cloud robots is also the world’s top hardware virtualization technology, and can realize free switching between multiple systems; “V printing - cloud” printing public platform, the first self-service cloud printing public service platform in China, creates an Internet eco-printing system.

Artificial intelligence technology is vastly versatile. Judging from CHITEC, industry-oriented artificial intelligence applications are emerging, and big data, artificial intelligence and the real economy are being integrated. As a representative of intelligent manufacturing, the robot industry has developed at a fast clip. Industrial robots, special robots, and service robots can be seen everywhere. The capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles have been greatly improved. ARES II-A-700 portable long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle with BVR automatic aerial work platform leads domestic and foreign drones of the same level in terms of endurance. Beijing’s industrial Internet platform has formed the ability to design, simulate, produce, develop, and manage the full lifecycle.

In the service industry, blind guiding robots, surgical robots, and educational robots are showing their special prowess. Gump Come’s integrated retail robots provide intelligent solutions for the new retail industry; new AI terminal product AI voice book marks the new business models, new models, and new services of digital and network-based development of the intelligent voice industry. The intelligent follow-up suitcases adopt precision military radio positioning technology to achieve two-way intelligent tracking.

Integration and innovation bring a new look to the traditional industries. In the First Promotion Fair on the Achievements of Integrating Informationization and Automatization of Coal Mines and Intelligent Technical Equipment, the major coal groups such as China Energy Group, China National Coal Group, China Coal Technology and Engineering Group, Yankuang Group, and Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group demonstrated the achievements in the deep integration of informatization and industrialization, and accelerated digital, network-based and intelligent development of the coal industry.

Chinese provinces and cities compete to showcase new technologies and new industries. Shandong establishes the modern marine industry system; Guizhou takes the lead in the big data industry; Xi’an is aiming for breakthroughs and innovations in key generic technologies, demonstrating independent innovation achievements as the city of hard science and technology; Tibet harnesses science and technology to develop unique animal and plant resources as the treasures of the plateau; Jilin’s biotechnology and ecological agriculture are impressive. Painuo Biotechnology is the world’s only company that specializes in the development of pine nut products. Hong Song Bao products are sold in Europe and Americas.

III. Integration of green development and innovative development promotes the formation of green innovation economy

This CHITEC leads the green trend and focuses on promoting the formation of a green innovative economy. Green ideas, green technologies, green products, and green industries can be seen everywhere.

The first is ecological and environmental governance. Ecological methods are used to solve ecological problems and ensure the lucid waters and lush mountains. Beijing Drainage Group demonstrated three world-leading strategic technologies for anammox of high ammonia-nitrogen wastewater, anammox of urban wastewater, and advanced anaerobic digestion. The Nanning Shajiang River Basin governance project and the water environmental governance of Binhai National Wetland Park in Beihai City undertaken by the company become the masterpieces for conserving ecological water resources and safeguarding ecological homestead. China National Bluestar’s black smelly water ecological restoration system can improve the self-purification capability of water bodies and realize the virtuous cycle of microbial ecology in water bodies.

The second is the focus on the real economy. The deep integration of green development and innovation is promoted. BAIC New Energy demonstrated a slew of new energy vehicles, including plug-in hybrid, hydrogen cell technology, and next-generation distributed electric drive chassis. The breakthroughs in the three technological innovation projects demonstrated the leading position in new energy vehicles. Energy Saving and Environmental Protection Exhibition Zone for the achievements of technological innovation and entrepreneurial activities in Zhongguancun Innovation Park showcases a group of innovative products and integrated solutions with leading technologies in the field of low-carbon energy conservation.

Graphene products are in the spotlight in the field of environmental protection. the graphene far-infrared electric heater by Lvneng Jiaye, and graphene lithium ion battery, graphene air purifier, and graphene engine oil energy-saving improver by Carbon Century are economical, energy-saving, comfortable, and environmentally-friendly.

Disruption is a big part of innovation. The modified coloring technology in the Xinjiang exhibition area disrupts the traditional dyeing technology, and saves water and energy without pollution; the end product reaches the EU Class A standards; Muyu Technology’s “air hand-washing” disrupts the traditional water-saving cleaning mode, and its world’s first low-pressure efficient atomizing technology has a water-saving rate of 90%.

The third is the development of a circular economy. Good Food’s ECS advanced circular breeding system is China’s first aquaponics system that can be reproduced in large scale. It has a low cost and high yield without emission or pollution; ECOBAO applies ecological wetland compound purification technology to the development of indoor air purifiers, creating a new field in air ecological purification. The self-developed core components of the ecological air purifiers can be automatically cleaned, having such advantages as recycling, low cost, safety and convenience.

IV. Demonstrate the results of military-civilian integration and accelerate the coordinated application of military and civilian products

The military and civilian integration is a national strategy. It is both a move to rejuvenate the nation and a strategy to strengthen the armed forces. The military-civilian integration scientific and technological achievements exhibition area, the first at CHITEC, showcases state-of-the-art military-civilian cooperation projects, emergency rescue technical equipment, electronic communication equipment, aerospace technology applications, engine research and development, facial recognition technology, and robots. Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone demonstrates new achievements in the military and civilian integration. The Hyperbola-1S rocket by Space Honor is a single-stage solid rocket. It is China’s first truly private rocket and the first private rocket successfully launched except the rockets by the United States. LinkSpace’s New Line-1 is low-cost small liquid carrier rocket that has achieved a 10-meter high takeoff and soft landing. It plans to complete its first payload orbiting flight test by 2020; LandSpace’s medium-sized liquid carrier rocket system “Zhuque II” is China’s first liquid oxygen methane propellant carrier rocket. Being environmentally friendly, non-toxic and non-polluting, it is suited to high-density and high-frequency launch services, and can be expanded into reusable carrier rockets in the future. At the exhibition area of Xi’an as the capital of hard science and technology, Tianhe Defense – China’s first listed privately-owned military enterprise – displayed high-end featured industrial clusters represented by big data and telecommunications and the Internet of Things. China SmartHuter portable air defense missile command system developed by the company combines digital smart technology and traditional portable air-defense missiles, enhancing the IT-based combat capability of individual shoulder-fired missiles.

Hunan holds high the banner of “military and civilian integration and a strong industry-driven Hunan” and demonstrates and promotes a number of military-civilian integration projects. Beidou Safety Research Institute sets up the first navigation information security military-civilian integration industry collaborative innovation platform in the Beidou navigation field. Its navigation information security products fill gaps in navigation information security technology and product field. China’s first set of entire Beidou machine is exported. Several core indicators are at the forefront of the world.

V. Upgrade the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to accelerate the new momentum

This CHITEC focuses on demonstrating the fruitful results China has achieved in nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem and releasing the private capital and wisdom of the people. It is an upgraded version of innovation and entrepreneurship featuring high-end, ecosystem, financing, and international standards.

XKI Angel Fund, the world’s first angel fund for the hard technology industry, has incubated 233 hard technology companies; Jilin has established 106 technology business incubators at the provincial level and above and formed a sound innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem; Guizhou has created “Super Brain” by establishing 48 domestic and overseas incubators; Guiyang High-tech Smart Operation Management Co., Ltd. becomes China’s first professional incubator for big data industry.

At the exhibition area of achievements in technological innovation and entrepreneurship, it highlights the incubation industrial chain of technological enterprises such as Zhongguancun Inno Way, TusStar, and Microsoft Accelerator, and introduces the unremitting efforts and contribution made by China Technology Exchange, China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and China Innovation Challenge for the innovation and entrepreneurship cause. The Capital Youth Technology Innovation Achievements area features 21 innovation projects. The “Post-80s” and “Post-90s” generations show strong capabilities in technological innovation.

VI. Create a collaborative innovation community and fast track for Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei industrial development

Since the implementation of the coordinated development of the Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei region strategy four years ago, Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei have enhanced industrial coordination and linkage, and opened up the innovation chain, implemented the industrial chain, and extended the park chain. The construction of “2+4+N” industrial cooperation pattern is accelerated and a number of major projects for industrial cooperation have been implemented. Industrial synergy development has entered the fast track.

Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei have their own advantages. Tianjin focuses on displaying the key platform for “1+16” industrial undertaking, which will relieve Beijing of functions nonessential to its role as the capital; Hebei demonstrates precision in undertaking industries, and the new pattern of accelerated development in aligning with and serving Beijing and Tianjin; Beijing showcases achievements in innovation in ten high-tech and cutting-edge industries, including new-generation information technology, integrated circuit industry, software and information services, AI industry, pharmaceutical and health, smart equipment, energy conservation and environmental protection, new energy smart car, new materials, and technology service, providing quality resources for matchmaking purposes.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Collaborative Development Industry Cooperation Exhibition Area focuses on Beijing’s new “Two Wings”, four functional areas for strategic cooperation, and 46 specialized cooperation platforms. Of these, the construction of Beijing-Tianjin Cooperation Demonstration Zone, Beijing-Tianjin Industrial New City in Wuqing, and other theme parks in Cangzhou, Zhengding, and Baoding is accelerated, and the agglomeration effect and demonstration effect are gradually appearing; Beijing-Cangzhu-Bohai New District Biopharmaceutical Industry Park has attracted more than 100 projects, including nearly 80 Beijing-based pharmaceutical companies that have signed contracts. It has become an example of “agglomerating industry undertaking, making specialized park construction, and coordinating off-site supervision.”

The green development and ecological progress are an important part of the collaborative development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Intelligent Energy-saving and Low-carbon Exhibition Area showcases emerging technologies in “Internet + energy-saving and low-carbon”, including high efficiency and energy saving, clean energy, and resource recycling. Of these, “Jinghuan Model”, a smart classification of waste, represents the high-end development trend of the sanitation technology industry; heating system energy management center technology provides data-based energy services, and so on in an intelligent way for the heating industry.

VII. Beijing strives to be the pacesetter in building a powerful nation through science and technology by accelerating quality and speed

At the exhibition area of “Three Cities and One District” technological innovation achievements, Beijing has stepped up speed and quality in building the National Science and Technology Innovation Center. The Beijing National Science and Technology Innovation Center is becoming the “bellwether” in making China an innovative country and a strong power in science and technology.

As the “bellwether” for Beijing to build the nationwide scientific and technological innovation center, Zhongguancun Science City has spread its wings. In this “birthplace of original innovation and main scene of independent innovation”, top-flight scientists have established a number of new R&D platforms, the formation of high-tech industrial structures has been accelerated, and the leading enterprises and new economic enterprise clusters have emerged. It boasts 272 invention patents per 10,000 people, 8 times the national average.

Geared to the leading science and technology in the world, Future Science City is building a global-leading technological innovation source. A group of central SOEs such as China National Offshore Oil Corporation, China Telecom, and China Energy Group have become the pillars of science and technology innovation in the Future Science City. The school-enterprise, government-enterprise, and enterprise-enterprise joint model in the Future Science City will achieve the boundless innovation across regions, ownership systems and national borders, leaving a deep impression on the visitors.

Huairou Science City goes all out to building the comprehensive national science center and focuses on “pillars of a great power.” The large scientific installations on display include High Energy Synchrotron Source, comprehensive extreme condition experimental devices, earth system numerical simulation device, space environment ground-based monitoring network (phase II of the meridian project), and multimodal cross-scale biomedical imaging facilities; the cross platforms include clean energy material testing and diagnosis platform, material genome research platform, advanced light source technology research and development and testing platform, space science satellite and payload development test and guarantee platform, advanced transport and measurement technology comprehensive experimental platform, etc.; meanwhile, it also showcases achievements in such core sectors as environmental protection, nano-industry, and new materials.

The Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone, as the area for the application of scientific and technological achievements and a demonstration zone for technological innovation, focuses on the rapid development of the application of scientific and technological achievements and the booming development of innovative industrial clusters; it chiefly demonstrates the industry clusters including new-generation information technology, intelligent manufacturing and robot, biomedicine and big health, high-end automobiles and new energy vehicles, new energy and new materials, and energy conservation and environmental protection, as well as technological and cultural integration.

At the exhibition area for innovation achievements at the functional zones of science and technology industries, Shunyi District of Beijing tells the story of innovation-driven development and industrial metamorphosis; Chaoyang District highlights the “Future Forum” that creates the world’s most influential scientific public-welfare platform, demonstrating a new landscape in high-tech industries and new economic development.

VIII. Integrate the global innovation network with the Belt and Road technology cooperation as the starting point

Technological innovation is an important driving force for the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative. This CHITEC focuses on cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, big data, nanotechnology, quantum computers, and smart cities, thus expanding the new space for technology cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Xinjiang demonstrates the achievements in the innovation-driven development pilot zone in the Silk Road Economic Belt. The pilot zone is the core carrier for leading the science and technology industry in Xinjiang, and is the first regional pilot zone where China has integrated the Belt and Road initiative and innovation-driven strategy in the underdeveloped border regions in western China. Zhongguancun Science City actively integrates into global innovation network and explores cross-border innovation and offshore innovation models. At present, it has fostered close cooperation with international innovation centers in the United States, Germany, and Israel, and carried out exchanges and cooperation with Microsoft, Oracle, and other multinationals’ R&D centers in China. Hanhai Incubator has created an investment + incubation + cross-border accelerated innovation model that links global innovation resources.

At the CHITEC themed talks, Henning Kagermann, President of the German Academy of Science and Engineering, gave a speech to introduce the German innovation system. The 3rd International Marine Sci-tech & Project Cooperation Meeting focuses on exchanges with merchants from Germany, Canada, France, South Korea, and ASEAN countries regarding issues such as cooperation in the Belt and Road marine industry, and the going global strategies for sea-related enterprises. The Belt and Road Business Salon focuses on the investment and trade information in countries such as Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, as well as the negotiations for cooperation projects.

The 22nd China Beijing International High-Tech Expo is slated to be held on May 16-19, 2019.
